Wondering what to do first in Minecraft survival? You should start here!

We’ve all been there. Starting off your first Minecraft adventure can be quite overwhelming. I mean, you’re all along and defenseless in a hostile world and you don’t know what lies ahead. You don’t even know where to start.

But that’s why I’m here. This guide will be the torch that will light up your path as you venture into your new Minecraft survival world. Let’s make sure to gather everything you need in your first few days in the survival world.

This guide will show you the first five crucial steps on what to do first in Minecraft survival. For you to establish a safe place where you can spend your nights in peace and pave the way for your epic journey.

Step 1. Gather Basic Resources

Minecraft is packed with a lot of resources and by obtaining these basics, players get a taste of how the game works. In case you are still wondering about what to do first in Minecraft survival, start by collecting those. This will make sure you’re off to a great start.

1. Start by Gathering Logs. Walk up to the nearest tree and start punching it until the wood drops. Aim to chop down about two trees completely. The wood you collect can be transformed into various useful items in the game. For instance, one piece of wood can be converted into four wooden planks, which are essential for crafting.

2. Convert all your Logs into Wooden Planks. The wood itself isn’t very versatile, but wooden planks are incredibly useful. These planks are the basic building blocks you’ll use throughout the game.

3. Make a Crafting Table. Place one piece of wood into the crafting grid to create four wooden planks. Then, use four planks in a square pattern to craft the table. Once you have the Crafting Table, set it on the ground to use it. This table is essential for crafting more complex items like tools, doors, and many other things.

4. Look for Some Animals. Travel if necessary to find and kill a few animals, particularly sheep. Aim to kill at least three sheep to collect enough wool. Extra animals around can provide additional food, so don’t hesitate to gather as much as you can.

5. Gather some Grass Seeds. Hit the grass as you move around. These seeds will be useful later for planting and farming. Collecting seeds while you search for animals is efficient and ensures you have resources for future needs.

6. Create a Bed. This requires three wool and three wooden planks. Having a bed is crucial as it allows you to sleep and repair your health. You can obtain wool by killing sheep or crafting it from strings if you find spiders. Alternatively, you might find a bed in a village and take it.

7. Craft a Chest to store your valuable items. This is important to ensure you don’t lose your hard-earned resources if you die.

Step 2. Arm yourself with tools

It is the time for us to create tools. What to do first in Minecraft survival, is knowing what tools to craft. Tools serve dual purposes: defending against threats and gathering essential resources. Proper placement in the crafting grid ensures success. Without the right tools, achieving your goals in the game becomes challenging.

1. Wooden Pickaxe. You can craft a wooden pickaxe using sticks and wooden planks. Use it to mine cobblestone until it wears out. Cobblestone is crucial for making tools. Although the wooden pickaxe is weak, it’s your first step to better tools.

2. Cobblestone and Sticks. This is crucial in crafting all the useful tools such as Shovel, Hoe, Axe, and Sword. Dig into hillsides to find the stone and break it with the wooden pickaxe.

3. Shovel. For digging up dirt or sand, create a shovel. It makes collecting materials easy and can even gather snow.

4. Hoe. Make a hoe if you want to grow plants. It prepares the soil and lets you plant seeds in it.

5. Axe. To efficiently gather wood, craft an axe. It speeds up chopping and lasts a long time.

6. Sword. If you need to defend yourself, make a sword. It deals more damage to monsters, animals, or other players when you attack.

7. Arrows and Bows. For ranged attacks, make a bow with string from spiders and a stick. Craft arrows using sticks and feathers. This setup allows you to attack enemies from a distance effectively.

Step 3. Build your Shelter Base

Building a shelter is crucial on your first day in Minecraft survival because night brings dangerous monsters called mobs. These creatures can harm you. A shelter provides safety from mobs, ensuring you can survive the night and focus on gathering resources and crafting tools without risking harm.

1. Choosing your Materials. Decide on a material like dirt, wood, or stone. Use your tools to gather enough for a basic shelter. Dirt is the quickest option, but if you want something more pleasing, cobblestone or sandstone work well too. Plan the size of your house based on how many chests, beds, furnaces, and supplies you’ll need.

2. Building your House. Find a flat area for your house to avoid jagged terrain. Outline your house’s perimeter using your chosen blocks. A good size for your first house is about 10 by 12 blocks. Start building from a corner by jumping and placing blocks as you land. Five blocks high is a good starting height, counting the base block.

3. Put Lights/Torches. Different hostile mobs spawn in the dark,, so keep your shelter well-lit to prevent them from spawning inside. Use torches for this. Gather coal from the environment or make charcoal by crafting a furnace with stone blocks. Use wooden logs in the furnace to create charcoal, which you can then use to craft torches.

Step 4. Acquire Food

After securing your shelter, for nighttime safety, the next priority on what to do first in Minecraft survival is gathering your food. Every action like mining and running reduces your hunger. Keeping your hunger bar full allows your character to heal naturally.

1. Craft a Furnace. Make sure to have a furnace, as it is essential for cooking food. Craft it with cobblestone. You’ll need the furnace to turn wood into charcoal if you haven’t found coal. A furnace requires 8 cobblestones in all crafting spots except the middle. It’s handy to have multiple furnaces for cooking different items in a row.

2. Hunting for Food. Another option for food is meat. Find animals like cows, pigs, or chickens. Punch them until they die, it may be tough, but it’s survival. Without a weapon, it takes many punches; animals run in fear after the first hit, so chase them carefully. Avoid hitting them into holes. Killing an animal gives you raw meat.

3. Cooking Meat. Of course, since I don’t want to eat raw, I’d love to cook it. Place it in the furnace to smelt an item. Use wood or coal in the fuel slot and place raw meat above it. Cooking it thoroughly ensures it’s safe to eat.

Step 5. Start your Farm

Farming allows you to secure a sustainable food source and obtain essential supplies so that you don’t have to spend time hunting for them. This is also where your hoe gets handy.

1. Wheat Farm. You can collect seeds by breaking grass; not all grass gives seeds, but a field of grass yields plenty. Prepare a plot of land with water nearby to grow wheat. Plant seeds on tilled soil and wait for them to mature. Wheat doesn’t need water right next to it, but having nearby water keeps the soil hydrated and helps wheat grow faster.

2. Sugarcane Farm. Sugarcane grows naturally near water. Plant single blocks of sugarcane on dirt next to water. Dig long trenches near water and plant sugarcane along the edges. Sugarcane is useful for food and making paper.

3. Building an Animal Farm.  Look for animals nearby or lure them with wheat or carrots to build your farm. If you can’t lure them, fence them in. An animal farm is crucial for resources and food later in the game.

Conclusion

Survival has never been easy, but by preparing yourself and ensuring you are fully equipped to overcome any challenges, you will be capable and aware of the dangers ahead. This guide significantly helps you understand what to do first in Minecraft survival.
