The Complex Gaming Minecraft Server is currently one of the most popular servers in the world, and for a good reason. With roughly 3000 players online at all times and the recent update to version 1.21, CG offers a great experience for both veteran players and newcomers.
Aside from the Vanilla server, they also provide for a Tekkit server and a Pixelmon option. Tekkit is a combination of visual mods for survival that really pushes the game to a new level visually. Pixelmon is a Pokémon/Digimon mod for Minecraft with all sorts of animals you can find in the game.
Within the Vanilla option, you will be able to find all of the popular game mods such as Survival, Prison, Skyblock, Hardcore, Factions, and other mini-game modes.
While there is a bit of a learning curve adapting to the new textures and options, it is very easy to get into the game. Additionally, the community is very good and feels very welcoming from the get-go.

ToggleWhat Can You Expect from the Complex Gaming Minecraft Server?
While all of the best Minecraft severs have similar ideas on how to organize the server, each has its little differences. For Complex Gaming, the focus is on core gameplay with players building the game around what is already provided.
That might sound as if it’s heavy handed, but it actually forces a community much better than a “do whatever” approach. And, because there is always an option for beginners which gives more leeway for mistakes, nobody falls behind.
There are some issues when it comes to resource packs updating. When you start your game on the CG server for the first time you will need to update the packs, but that process is relatively easy.
Finally, the factions and survival worlds are very developed, which might be daunting for new players but will actually make the game extremely fun. It’s very hard to find diamonds but if you join a group the gear will usually already be available and you can start cooperating and spreading your team’s influence.
The Option Quality
If we exclude the two non-Vanilla servers the options provided by Complex Gaming can be considered rather basic. The options you will have are:
- Creative
- Factions
- Survival (Simple)
- Survival Hardcore
- Prison
- Skyblock
The survival servers are revolving from time to time to provide new players an option to compete with veterans. But, there is also a dimensional store so that your accomplishments in one mode can be transferred to a degree.
The Factions subserver is probably the most fun as it allows for instant cooperation. For newer players, this will provide a bit of safety before you get your bearings. Regretfully, this server still plays on the 1.18.2 version of the game, meaning that some items will not be available.
The compromise is that CG does use some mods and custom settings. It is possible to have improved items that are not in the base game, or trade without making a villager trading hub.
Shaders and Resource Packs
Texture packs and shaders used for the Complex Gaming Minecraft server are, for the lack of better words, basic. And, this is a good thing because they are not forcing people to use textures that their device might not be able to run.
There are also some new blocks and different textures for old blocks, but they are not intensive for your hardware.
The only downside is that most of these packs will need to be reapplied frequently.
To refresh texture packs on the Complex Gaming server, press Enter and type “/resourcepack –“ to make the packs download again. If you are seeing any black or purple cubes once you start don’t think that is just a bug but enter this command and apply the correct textures.
Finally, because the textures are not heavy, they will work with any advanced options that you might have installed on your device. This might create a bit of a ping on servers with more people, but will overall work fine.
User Interface for Newcomers
It takes literal minutes to get used to the Complex Gaming server UI. Everything is very visibly written down and you won’t need to look around for long.
There is a learning curve because of all of the texture changes and multiple options within each mode. For instance, there is the regular and the Oasis mode for Skyblock where you will receive a lot large island with the latter.
Getting your bearing around the introduced mechanics and the new types of blocks takes a bit of time. If anything, it reminded me of the first time I started playing Minecraft where I didn’t know what most blocks do.
The Community
There is always a few hundred people present on the server and it’s very easy to find a community. While people aren’t as talkative in the public chat due to it being discouraged, local chats are on fire and there are even people with microphones who are respectful, which is new.
At a glance, there is a thriving community of players, and the Factions mode is especially active. The bases look very fun and I’m sad that I wasn’t able to see any of them from within.
Survival servers as well have an emphasis on cooperation over PvP looting. For some of us who are used to many different servers this might sound constricting, but I believe that most players will find it relaxing.
Overall Conclusion
I believe that I will keep playing on the Complex Gaming server at least for a bit after this dive-in. Especially the Oasis option in Skyblock, which is my favorite mode, looks amazing to explore.
The servers runs smoothly, the textures are good, and with the apparent good community it is bound to be fun. And, if you want to join us playing on this server, hit us up on our Discord and we can get together to play.
